ABOUT SOSUA, DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

Sosua is one of the smaller beach towns of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic and it started as a farming village during world war II, when fleeing Jews escaped nazi persecution and the island allowed them to settle in the North lands of this Caribbean island in 1938 when Rafael Trujillo offered to let in 100,000 visas. The government provided help and resources that turned into successful dairy and meat businesses. Later in the mid 1980`s the travel industry focused in the North coast and Playa Dorada took off, creating the conditions to make Sosua a main attraction because of its many natural beauties including its famous beaches.

Today Sosua is a booming tourist destination with large scale investments in real estate and resorts. Many restaurants, shops, discos and cafés line up the streets and beaches, and tourists from all over the world own businesses, condos and villas in Sosua. El Batey is the main town area where most of the action takes place, and Sosua beach is one of the best diving and snorkeling experiences in the North coast. The beach is a half moon inside the bay, with beautiful golden sand and palm trees, its crystalline waters showing the bottom and colorful reef fish. Hotels such as the Sosua  Bay Resort, Victorian House, Casa Marina Beach and Sosua By the Sea are the most common ones known to all, as well as dozens of smaller hotels and B&B`s that offer self catering lodging in town. Daytime is full of activities, specially in the beach area. Fishing, horse back riding, snorkeling, buggies, dirt bikes, golfing, diving, surfing,  touring and trekking are among the activities found with tour operators in Sosua. The cuisine is as varied as the population: Many expats from places as far as Germany, Austria, Canada, USA, Italy, France, and Eastern Europe have settled here and own many of the businesses.

Night life in Sosua has made it a specially preferred Caribbean destination by many single men who travel to have fun with the local women, many of which will make the first move in the bars in order to get the promise of getting a foreign husband or a better life with them in the island.

The landscape in Sosua is beautiful, the beaches are amazingly inspiring and the people are nice and happy. Sosua is famous because it is slowly turning into a more self catering experience as many villas are being built and the villa rental business is replacing all inclusive hotel deals.
